Being offered is a signed UK first edition of Wally Herbert's "A World of Men-Exploration of Antarctica" published by Eyre & Spottiswoode in 1968. Very few people accept Cook's claim to be the first man to reach the North Pole overland, Peary's claim, whilst he still has his supporters ,is regarded by many as dubious. Therefore there is a school of thought that the first person to reach the North Pole overland was Wally Herbert. This was acheived in 1968 when he led the first surface crossing of the Arctic Ocean by its longest axis via the North Pole, a 15-month journey of 3,720 miles that has never been repeated; in Antarctica he mapped almost 46,000 square miles of terrain. His is a tremendous polar acheivement but it has sadly never received the recognition that it deserves. The book tells of his expolarations and travels in Antarctica but it was published whilst he was leading the 1968 British Trans-Arctic expedition, which may have been the first to place a person on the North Pole by an overland route, hence the wrap around band. As you can see it is signed by Wally Herbert on the title page. The book has no faults apart from on the end paper there was once a sticker which carefully removed nevertheless left a slightly roughened appearance to the paper over an area 3 cms by 1.5 cms.You can see this in the 5th photo.
