Powered by Auction Hawk New Silk HAKATA OBI for Ladies Japanese Kimono This is a brand new 100% silk obi made in the Hakata region of Japan, near Fukuoka City. Hakata silk obi have been coveted since the 14th century when a local merchant traveled to China to study textile techniques. When he returned he passed along what he'd learned, and the distinctive feel and look of the hakata Obi was born, with its series of woven stripes and a silk weave thats known for its ease of tying and the distinctive silk squeak when its pulled tight. T are currently 55 master craftsmen among 664 workers in 93 mills producing these elegant, distinctive obi. The kimono industry has struggled in recent years as people wear kimono less and less, but thanks to a renewed effort by the local government to protect this ancient art, hakata silk craftsmen and their work are still in great demand. I don't often see new silk obi for sale online, and hadn't imagined I'd be able to offer any because of price considerations.
