This exquisite hand wrought silver basket is unique in design with its ram's horn handle. Well constructed and large in scale, it measures 15-1/4" wide by 10-1/2" deep by 9" high. The form is well balanced and the craftsmanship is sharp and crisp with exceptional detail, especially in the hand chased leaves and acorns motif. The piece has light surface scratches on the inside bottom as well as the underside, but are consistent with age and are within expectations of normal wear. A pin which anchors the horn into the motif on one side is missing, however, it has no bearing on structural integrity or functionality as the horn is secured by both design and the pin on the opposite side (photo identifies). It would be easily replaceable if one so desired. I find one very small ding on the lower radius which is hardly noticeable. A couple small acid discolorations can be found on the underside from silver content testing. T are no monograms or monogram removals. I find no repairs or resolder. A defining thick rolled band conforms to the flowing upper brim. Overall weight is 4.2 lbs. Two hallmarks are stamped into the band. Accompanying the piece is a letter from the Silver Department of Sotheby's of New York , dated November 7, 1994 , with an opinion of origin and value issued by them based upon photographs of the basket provided to them. They feel it is of Spanish origin. I have had two separate tests administered on the underside, each with a small drop of nitric acid on a small area w the surface silver was scratched through for testing by others prior to my acquiring the piece. The results of each were a dark grey color. The basket is a stunning piece of original artwork obviously fabricated by a master craftsman, and will enhance any serious silver collection.
