RE-LISTED AT LOWER PRICE.was $30 now is $10 as the top silver sheet is missing in some areas . Please, i have a brain disorder involving all nervous systems in the body which means emotions can set off a major painful flare up. So I am asking not to put yourself as a watcher UNTIL LAST DAY & YOU MIGHT BID NOT JUST WATCH . For I get excited to see all these watchers then no sale and it truly causes me pain. Thanks and God bless you for this simple act of thoughtfulness:) Fifteen years ago, I found this very heavy, ugly tray hanging on a peg on the wall of the steps going down to the stonewalled basement with dirt floors. I washed it and it was still a heavy black ugly tray but I could read the 1875. So I figured hang on to it. After all, the original house was over 200 years old and some of the wood work and ornate carvings in the moldings showed it as a "period piece" of architecture that had gone through many renovations over the years.(My neighbors who lived in the town all their lives verified from stories passed down that indeed it was built over 200 years ago.) So now I understood why the tray was still in residence. It was so black with age that it blended into the dark beams of the poorly lit staircase. It weighs approximately 2 pounds.3.5oz it was not hard for each home owner to "leave" it the UGLY TRAY behind as I said, it was black and blended in to the dark stairwell wall. It is an oval shape, 16 3/4" long x 12" wide. The serving portion is 1/8" deep. The edge around the oval is 1/8" with a pattern of 1/8" carved and then 1/8" raised. The silver shows up more in the carved sections.The dark areas on the tray ARE COPPER, NOT RUST. It is the second layer of sheets used. T is a blank oval in the center w the family name would appear. It is 3"L x 1 1/2" wide. AUTHENTICITY CAN BE FOUND ON THE BACK .Turn the tray so that the silver handle is on top. Then 2 7/8" from the end of the oval is engraved in capital block letters: SHEETS R. S. Co. 1875 (2layers of # can be seen) NEXT TO 1875 is the LOGO IT IS AN ENGRAVED SCALE FOR MEASURING WEIGHTS. THIS SCALE IS POINTED TO THE EXACT MIDDLE (sorry my camera takes such bad pics) Under the 1875 is what looks like a 6 with the bottom part deeply cut and the curves lighter. an inch away is the #3 and again it is 2 layers deep. THIS IS A REMINDER OF THEIR PROCESS OF FUSING 3 SHEETS OF PRECIOUS METAL OVER ORDINARY METAL SO THAT ONE GETS THE BEAUTY OF REAL SILVER BUT NOT THE "COST". So mid-income Americans could show off thier "fancy dishware". The same could be said for Tavern owners who needed strong trays for delivering heavy beer steins. The HANDLES ARE 1 3/4" FROM EDGE OF TRAY. THE TOP IS 3" LONG BY 3/8" WIDE.THE SIDE HANDLES ARE ALSO 3/8" WIDE. tHE HANDLES ARE HOLLOW ON THE BOTTOM WHICH IS W THEY ARE FUSED TO THE PLATE SO AS NOT TO MAR ITS BEAUTY. The BACK OF THE TRAY SHOWS ALL SLIVER PLATE EXCEPT FOR SOME SPOTS OF ALMOST 100 YEARS OF WEAR AND TEAR. Now to try and show some pics of what was a black ugly heavy tray.By using silver polish we were able to get the tray clean and with professional cleaning you will have a WONDERFUL R.-S.- Co.
