Vintage Hunt Cups, also called Stirrup Cups, also called Upside Down Cups5 1/4 inches high x 3 3/16 inch diameter 1 pair of cups Silver plate I have had these hunt cups for over 20 years, displayed in my china cabinet. They are silver plate and in MINT condition. The closest comparison I can find on a google search, is a pair of silver plate hunt cups that sold recently for $241.50 at the Aspire Auctions website, /auction44/7444.html . Please view these as a reference only. A hunting tradition, the expression "stirrup cup" has two meanings, both closely connected with hunting. It has long been a tradition for those partaking in a hunt to have a drink before the hunt commences, as a toast to success in the pursuit of their victims. The tradition goes back a long way, certainly into Medieval times - a drink would be offered to riders before they set off after their quarry, whilst they were mounted on horseback, comfortable and ready for the off. This design enabled the rider to grasp the cup in a gloved hand whilst clutching the reins of a frequently skittish horse, and may have originated with drinking horns.
