Silver Sheen Obsidian Stone Rock Gem Egg This beautiful egg is almost 2.75 inches or 67 mm in height. Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass. This glassy, lustrous mineral is found in lava flows. Obsidian is produced when lava cools very quickly. The lava cools so quickly that no crystals can form. Inclusions in Obsidian create different patterns or effects. If it contains patterns of gas bubbles remaining from the lava flow, aligned along layers created as the molten rock was flowing before being cooled, it may have interesting effects such as a golden or silver sheen or an iridescent, rainbow-like sheen (rainbow obsidian). In silver sheen when the material is held in bright light it has a flash of silver chatoyance or light seeming to glow from within.Obsidian was important to many ancient cultures. It was one of the major barter materials, and has been used since prehistoric times for making tools, masks, weapons, mirrors and jewelry. Obsidian was named after a Roman-Obsius.
