A Rare Silver American Numismatic Society Plaquette / Medal of Sir Francis Drake commemorating the landing in North West America in 1579 Please refer to this website for more info on this medal: /americanhistorical.html Please also look at this link for more information: /lotdetail.aspx?lsid=AN00000641&lotno=4725 This is a rectangular medal with a curved top edge it is approximately 5.6cm by 6.5cm (at the widest point) and weighs approximately 113g. The obverse has the head of Sir Francis Drake with large ruffled collar. Above his head along the top edge it states: SIR FRANCIS DRAKE 1540-1596. Below the head on the right shoulder is the makers signature in script, Marschall (Medalist: Rudolph Ferdinand Marschall). Below this is a raised part with an Oak leaf in the middle of the date 1907.The reverse has a map of America showing the journey that was made. In the bottom left corner it states: IN COMMEMORATION OF THE DISCOVERY AND LANDING UPON THE NORTH-WESTERN COAST OF AMERICA BY THE FIRST ENGLISH CIRCUMNAVIGATOR A.D.1579On the right edge there are two markings, a six petal flower head stamp (possibly Austrian silver hallmark) and J.C, on the left edge it is stamped with the number 86.
