Outstanding enamel on board of a snake, a lizard, and a strange fantasy figure by important Tanzania and Tingatinga School artist Simon G. Mpata (1942-1984). A student and half-brother of Edward Tingatinga, who pioneered the style now known as Tingatinga, Mpata adopted the unique African painting style that combines African folklore, surrealism, humour, and primitivism. Although he passed away at a young age in 1984, Mpata became one of the most celebrated of the Tingatinga school artists. This painting by Mpata is characteristic of the Tingatinga style and an excellent example of Mpata's work. It is signed lower left and is in very good condition, measuring 12" x 12".
