This Singer sewing machine was made in Kilbowie, Scotland 122 years ago, in 1890...before Singer were using letter prefixes in their serial numbers, which started in 1900....It still runs as smoothly as the day it was manufactured....This machine started life as a 'foot treadle' machine, though the original treadle & cabinet has long gone it has been replaced - by a hand crank, wooden base & a 'dome' bentwood case....It is an early '28' Serial No. 9658894 & has a long 'boat' shuttle...The decal pattern (or what is left of it) is called 'Painted Roses' which was used on the '28s' between 1886 & 1894.... Like most of these beautiful early machines, it is simplicity itself to operate & will probably go on for another 122+ years... The machine does show signs of wear, it has been a very well used machine - but the action is smooth as silk....& the stitch length variation is generous, making it suitable for thick fabrics....It would suit someone who needs a simple, uncomplicated machine which will do a strong straight stitch for ever....My trusty pillow-case is folded & folded again - so eight layers of cotton fabric......& yes, same pillow-case, different stitches...All stitching is from the particular machine pictured, in each listing...The only 'new' part on this machine is the spool-winding rubber, as the original one had perished.
