Because these gems are hydrophane their appearance can be greatly enhanced when they are wet, giving an illusion of the true nature of the stone. None of my photographs are altered or edited in photo editing program. Hydrophane: Ethiopian Welo opals are known for this very special quality. These gems with gain and loose water according to their environment. When put in water many of these opals will turn a beautiful crystal clear. When removed they will dry, returning to their original state. Every opal is unique, some are more hydrophane than others.
