I got this unusual pair of ceremonial moccasins along with a bunch of other items from a small collection near Mission, South Dakota. It is very uncommon to find moccasins with beaded bottoms. This was only done for special situations like a naming ceremony or a wedding. If they were for use in this life, the beads could then be danced off after the ceremony. They were sometimes also made to wear in the next world w the beads would not be harmed when a person walked on them. Whichever the purpose, this is a charming pair that would make an excellent addition to anyone's collection. The background is done in a light blue with mountains around the side seams done in brown. T are also several double-feather designs. Feathers were usually something some one earned with some special accomplishment. T is also a stylized morning-star design in the top center of the moccasin. The moccasins measure 9 1/2 inches from the tip of the toe to the back of the heal and 3 1/4 inches or so across the ankle opening. The stand about 2 1/2 inches tall at the back.
