Sioux Indian beaded lizzard fetish with design of baby lizzard on its back, indicating use as a fertility doll. Size 4 3/4 inches long. Excellent condition with no missing beads. On deer hide. Note the little seashell on each foot. Found about 20 years ago at old pawn shop estate auction in Rapid City, South Dakota. The deceased owner of the pawn shop had liked one Indian woman's work so much that he bought all the fetishes she made over many years and never sold a single one, according to his son who sold the estate. He stored them in an old cardboard box under his counter. He owned the pawn shop for over 50 years. The entire box was sold as a single lot and I bought them all, much to my wife's chagrin. This work is rare and came from only this single source. I am now retired and am disposing of the entire collection. These fetishes were also used by Indian ladies to hang on their babys' cradleboards to ward off evil spirits. Stitch at bottom indicates primitive way of including baby's umbilical cord, but this practice was discontinued long ago. More recent method is to stuff with cloth or sage. Check, money order, or Paypal. Mail & insurance is $4.50. I always gladly combine shipping.
