Up for auction is a Lakota style, northern plains cradle board. This board is functional and can be used. This is very well made and grade A materials were used in it's construction. The frame is solid pine with brass tacks, deerskin and brass bells for decoration. The cradle board portion is unique in it's construction. The inner material portion of the board is shaved moose hide ( the moose was shot by a friend of mine in Alberta, Canada ) and then the moose hide was sewn over inside and out with red trade cloth. I actually had a furniture upholsterer do this for me because the three layers; trade cloth = moose hide = trade cloth, were much too thick to be sewn by hand. The lining in the back of the board is thick, brown elk hide and the wood is tied together with grade A deerskin. What wasn't sewn by the upholsterer was sewn with waxed imitation sinew. This cradleboard could be decorated with medicine wheels on the top or beaded if desired (by you). The cradle board measures 36.5" in length and is 11.5" wide at its widest point. We made this for my son years ago but he disliked it and it was never used. Get this board for your new family member or just to sit up inside your tipi or hang it in your home for decoration.
