Sad because the Banshees, one of the survivors of the English punk scene, went out with a whisper instead of roaring howl like they should have. Half of The Rapture is produced by Velvet Underground alumnus and art rock pioneer John Cale , while Siouxsie and her Banshees take control of the other half. Cale should have been nowhere near this album. While the Banshees-produced tracks sound like their vintage stuff, the Cale tracks stretch the Banshees' sound too thin. Siouxsie and the Banshees were at their best when they were doing things their way, and The Rapture is living proof that the Banshees succeeded because they never tried to fit into conventional musical structures. An ill-fitting goodbye. ________________________________________________________ You have to respect Siouxsie Sioux's role as an influence-without her, there wouldn't be nearly as much black nail polish at Lollapalooza-but artistically, she's been treading water since the mid '80s. I can finally appreciate this album, May 26, 2009 By sister honey (USA) - See all my reviews After literally having thrown the cassette of "Peepshow" out of my car window while driving because I was disgusted with Siouxsie and the Banshees, I wrote the band off. Fast forward 20 years and thanks to the digital age, I started sampling the last three albums by the band on iTunes and here at Amazon. While nothing like the heyday of Kaleidoscope, Juju and A Kiss in the Dreamhouse, I have come to appreciate Peepshow, Superstition and now The Rapture. A little pop, a little Creatures and now and again, a bit Siouxsie-ish, The Rapture is a solid album. Sadly, Siouxsie and the Banshees compromised their original vision (and alienated their old Goth fanbase) with overt pop leanings toward the latter part of their career. Their apparent attempt to entice more radio airplay like they had with the sensuous "Kiss Them for Me," actually a great song, spawned dreadful consequences in other respects.
