This is a 1926 etching of Peverils Castle signed by the artist Frank Short. It has his distinctive signature including the long bar on the "F" written in pencil on the lower right. The etching measures 10 1/2" X 8 1/2" on a 15 1/2" X 11 1/2" paper. There is a shield on the top right of the etching. The paper has an embossed mark and "FJ Head" watermark. On the lower right someone has written in pencil "AU Dick 1926 60.00". About the etching: Peverils Castle, Derbyshire shows the Castle keep at the top of a hill among trees. At the foot is the entrance to the peak cavern and several cottages. In the foreground is a pump and 3 sheep with their shepherd. About the artist: Frank Short (1857-1945) was born in Stourbridge, Worcestershire. He trained as anengineer but abandoned this career for art. He studied at South Kensington (later the Royal College of Art) and Westminster Schools of Art, London. He won gold medals at the Paris Salon for engraving and from 1891 until his retirement in 1924 he taught engraving at the Royal College of Art. The discipline he required from his students was largely responsible for the excellence of British etchings in the inter-war period. From 1910 to 1939 he was President of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, and in this capacity he was awarded a knighthood. In all he produced some 209 etchings and read more
