Easily some of the prettiest gem grade wood I've seen come from the McDermitt deposit in a few years, this gorgeous small slab is a fabulous example of a well preserved conifer species in gem grade agate with rich, natural wood tone coloring! The contorted shapes of these limbs are consistent with juniper found in the area but this log had what appear to be resin canals in the honeycomb wood structure (see the microphoto). It's a wonderful little specimen to introduce you to one of Oregon's premier petrified forests! This is a really beautiful specimen of the petrified wood found in a desolate sagebrush desert that spans over 100 square miles on the Oregon/Nevada border. It's a slice from a well preserved juniper tree that is actually somewhat of a puzzle under a loupe. At first glance (under 10x magnification) the wood appears to be juniper with sharp rings and equally sharp rays but the references I can find say juniper has no resin canals and this wood appears to. With that detail it appears closer to It's preserved with absolutely gorgeous gem quality agate in warm, natural wood tones forever capturing this ancient fossil.
