This very colorful Hubbard Basin petrified wood plate is "rip cut" (cut with the grain) from a well preserved conifer tree! It's a visually stunning example of how beautiful petrified wood can be! The wood grain is just amazing in the mirror polished face! T are several open crystal lined cavities that formed in the petrified log that the saw cut opens up to reveal the sparkling cyrstals inside - these are really dramatic and particularly clean and sparkly. The color variety in this specimen is simply amazing and the piece is virtually flawless! One of our best planks ever! While you can still find the occasional piece of bland, fractured wood from this location from commercial dealers, they usually have more fill (the trade term for glue) than color. We're lucky to have secured the finest selection of intensely colorful, perfectly preserved specimens we have over the last few years and we're happy to be able to help you add a truly collectible specimen to your own collection! If you're going to spend a few dollars on a nice Hubbard to expand your collection or even decorate with, it simply has to be one with this kind of color and character! This is a truly amazing piece of petrified wood. I'd been collecting petrified wood for several years before I came across my first piece of Hubbard Basin wood and I simply couldn't believe petrified wood could be this beautiful. You don't have to be a petrified wood collector to appreciate how amazingly gorgeous this agatized fossil from an ancient forest is. While the wood looks punky, rotten and brittle on the outside, if you touch it you realize quickly that it's not brittle at all, but agate hard and textured something like coral on the edges, made up of solid agate the rest of the way through. The interior is typically preserved in blue and gold agate with black, white, red, pink and other colors sometimes filling in the spectrum in the finest pieces. The wood isn't common (and is getting harder to obtain) as the digging is quite difficult and increasingly unproductive. The Nevada desert that it comes from is freezing cold in the winter and blistering hot in the summer. In other words, t isn't a lot of the high quality variety of this treasure in circulation. Our supply is arguably the best in the world, and this fine specimen demonstrates why we can claim that! I guarantee that once you've added a piece of this spectacular, highly agatized wood to your collection you won't look at any other petrified wood with quite so much admiration again. It's that gorgeous! You won't see many specimens cut this way even from the few shops lucky enough to have any of this wood to work with and of course nobody matches the lapidary work in our shop! The color in the wood grain in this slab is way above average compared to most Hubbards as the specimen looks like it was literally used as by a painter to wipe clean her brushes! The color variety in the wood grain is incredible.
