This is a truly collectible petrified red alder from the Yakima Valley in Central Washington. This is a very glassy round from a rarely seen but highly prized location in Washington state, and the species is not one often seen either. It has a perfect finish that reveals all this fine detail - only available from eBay's Original Rockshop - Sticks-in-Stones Lapidary! Look at the incredible detail in this amazingly preserved diffuse porous hardwood in our exclusive zoom view. We get the opportunity to handle very few hardwoods that are this choice and this beautiful! The sparse but thick rays from the fossil alder are easily visible to the naked eye in this high opal content log.This is a really beautiful specimen of the petrified wood found in a long off-limits location in Washington. The Yakima Canyon was incorporated into the US Army's Yakima Firing Range decades ago. Prior to that, this location produced some of the best preserved, glassiest and most colorful petrified wood logs ever to come out of the state - they really are among some of the Pacific Northwest's finest specimens. Years later a second deposit was discovered on the opposite side of the river Canyon which is now on private land and is also off limits to collecting.
