Kenner Starting Lineup - 1988 FIRST EDITION UNCIRCULATED! NEW YORK YANKEES - DON MATTINGLY AFA U90! Kenner introduced its STARTING LINEUP line of collectible sports action figures in the 1988 Toy Fair catalog (pages 98-105). This is a FIRST EDITION figure from an UNOPENED NEW YORK YANKEES CASE ASSORTMENT. Even better - it is graded UNCIRCULATED U90 (NM/MT) by AFA. Carded figures graded as UNCIRCULATED by AFA are extremely rare, with the designation created for items from UNOPENED CASE PACKS about 10 years ago. It might not be so unusual for unopened cases of modern figures to be sent in for grading, BUT THIS IS FROM AN UNOPENED CASE OF NEW YORK YANKEES, SITTING AROUND SINCE 1988! As a former Kenner employee, I obtained this item directly from a friend and co-worker who was a Senior Vice President of Marketing. Kenner executives were given product samples from early production runs. Some took them home and put them away. This guy's career in the toy industry had him eventually moving across the country about five times, moving his toy collection each time. A few years ago, he approached me about buying his collection (I did). Among the many items were team cases of STARTING LINEUP figures.
