Up for auction is a 1989 New York Yankees Don Mattingly vs. Boston Red Sox Wade Boggs One-on-One Starting Line-Up (SLU) baseball player set by Kenner. The set includes both a 4-inch action figure and a collectible baseball card of each baseball star. The set is near-mint on card (meaning it is still on its original store display card in its original packaging, never opened, with no fading, no major corner nubs on the hanging card, no creases or bends, no bubble damage). It comes with the plastic case you see in the photo.
SLU brand sports figurines and toy figurine sets are no longer in production. The Starting Lineup action figures were produced for a little over a ten-year period (1988 to 2001), first by Kenner and later by Hasbro. The toy line of sports action figures was conceived of by Pat McInally, a former professional American football player with the Cincinnati Bengals. The figures included sports stars from baseball, football, basketball, hockey; boxing, track & field, skating, soccer, and golf. During the 1988-2001 time period, the figures were very popular. When Hasbro shut down its Cincinnati operations in 2001, 53 years of Kenner history came to a close.
The figure set comes from a pet-free, smoke-free, home. While created as toys for children, these figures are of interest to many adult fans and sports collectors.
