Mike Silliboy makes the greatest small potato baskets! - This is the 2nd of this size small (it's the medium small) potato basket I have offered of Mike's in this ebay store. He also makes other size "small" potato baskets one larger and one smaller than this. These are scaled down models of the baskets used in Maine to harvest one of our biggest crops - potatoes. Maine farmers ordered full size bushel and peck potato baskets by the gross (a dozen dozen) - getting many of them from Mike's grandparents and other not so distant ancestors. Now potatoes are dug with machines and full size potato baskets aren't commercially used anymore. - Mike learned to make baskets from his father, Joseph Silliboy. This measures 8" in diameter, is 4" high to the rim and 8.5" to top of handle. It is made of brown ash splints, the traditional material of Maine and Eastern Canadian Native American basketmakers. This has both a carved bentwood rim and handle. Next picture shows the thicker center part of the handle - only someone who has carried a bushel size potato basket full of potatoes would recognize the importance of the thicker center - this is perfectly balanced. Rim is nicely wrapped - lesser quality utilitarian baskets have the rim nailed or even stapled. This basket uses some varying color heartwood and lighter outer ash - so Basket will display read more
