Offered with no reserve is the rare first edition, partially authored by John Milton, of one of the most important tracts of the English Civil War, entitled, “An Answer to a Booke Entituled, An Humble Remonstrance. … Written by Smectymnuus,” printed at London in quarto in 1641 for I. Rothwell. ”THIS IS THE FIRST SMECTYMNUUS TRACT AND THE POSTSCRIPT IS THE FIRST PROSE WORK AUTHORED BY JOHN MILTON TO APPEAR IN PRINT.” The full title of the work reads as follows: “An Answer to a Booke Entituled, an Humble Remonstrance. / In which, The Originall of Liturgy and Episcopacy is discussed. / And Quaeres propounded concerning both. / The Partiy of Bishops and Presbyters in Scripture Demonstrated. / The occasion of their Imparity in Antiquity discovered. / The Disparity of the Ancient and our Moderne Bishops manifested. / The Antiquity of Ruling Elders in the Church vindicated. / The Prelaticall Church Bownded. … / Written by Smectymnuus. / London, / Printed for I. Rothwell, and are to be sold by T.N. at the Bible in Popes-Head-Alley. 1641.” Smectymnuus is the combination of the initials of five mid-17th century English divines: Stephen Marshall; Edmund Calamy, Thomas Young, Matthew Newcomen, and William Spurstow.
