Circa 1962 Smith, the artworld's fairy godfather of camp and kitsch, was a performance artist, filmmaker, and photographer who published a single monograph during his lifetime, The Beautiful Book, with Piero Heliczer's Dead Language Press. The photographs were produced during the course of extended shooting sessions in Smith's Lower East Side apartment and included Marian Zazeela and Mario Montez. Smith's "low art" creative approach went on to influence Andy Warhol, John Waters, and countless other popular artists.
