A. SMITH / REHOBOTH 30" Yellow Birch Jointer Plane A. SMITH / REHOBOTH 30" yellow birch jointer plane. This plane has the A1 imprint, which has two stars (**) from AWP for rarity. From the longer length to narrower width ratio, and the slightly offset tote, the plane is from the early 1800's . Aaron Smith made planes up until his death in 1822, so it could date to any time prior to that date. The plane is 3-1/4" wide, with a 2-5/8" wide Newbould single cutter. The cutter is sharp .I've done a lot of repair work to this plane, in order to make it a really great user.Apparently a previous owner had left it upside down, where bugs were able to get to it. The tip of the tote was damaged, and the top surface of the plane at the toe was likewise affected. The plane never had a strike button, so that same top surface was badly splintered down about 1/4". There was also some bug trails at the front end of the sole. Since the sole was flat and the mouth aperture was small, under 1/8", I figured it deserved another chance and have done some repairs.My repairs include a new tote tip (beech, since the tote is beech), and a 3/8" thick inlay of apple wood at the top of the plane, with a rosewood strike button. The repair at the front of the sole is beech, since I didn't have any birch.There are still some random bug holes, but nothing active and read more
