This somewhat heavy Japanese smoothing plane, or hira-ganna, appears to be 30-40 years old. The maker's mark on the blade is clear but we are unable to read it, and it is accompanied by stamped-in pictures of pine needles. The seam of the lamination of softer iron is very clear, at about one-half of the way up the front of the main blade. The oak body is in good condition, with the usual wear-and-tear, and t are no fractures or cracks at the throat or anyw else. The blades are in very good condition but have a few small spots of light oxidation, but it could be cleaned up fairly easily. The cutting edge of the main blade is straight and sharp but has a little raggedness in a couple of places.Body: W3 1/2" (89mm) X L10 13/16" (274mm) X H1 3/8" (35mm) Blade: W2 7/16" (61mm) cutting edge X H3 3/4" (96mm) X D1/4" (7mm).
