This is a rare, nice, clean set Jennings patent fine thread double spiral wood auger bits in a wood and brass chest. The way I understand it, Russell Jennings had the patent on the drill design, but several other companies in the late 1800's acquired rights to use the Jennings design. 8 of the 13 drill bits are marked "SNELL JENNINGS" that means Snell made the Jennings pattern bits, the No. 4 is marked RUSSELL JENNINGS, and has a little bit of pitting on it, not rusty now, useable. The No. 5 is marked "RUSSELL JENNINGS NO. 100 MADE IN U.S.A.", like new condtion, the No. 11 is marked "RUSSELL JENNINGS", in good shape, minor wear, and the RUSSELL JENNINGS NO. 100 MADE IN U.S.A. STANLEY 100 PLUS" in very good condition. To compare the Snell bits to the Jennings bits in this set, I see no remarkable difference except perhap a 1/4" in length on the No. 11. All the bits with the Snell name are in very good sharp condition. The chest is in very good original condtion and has a pattent date of "MAY 1895" lightly stamped on the front lower section. The patent seems to refer to the chest design, not the drill bits, but also gives us a good idea of when Snell made these Jennings pattern bits.
