SNOWDEN AND BROTHER CIVIL WAR ERA MEDICAL KIT 1848-1860 This medical kit is believed to have been produced from 1848 to 1860 and would have been in use before and during the Civil War. Most of the significant battles of the Civil War were fought in rural areas near small towns. Many times the causalities completly overwhelmed the small understaffed and ill equiped regular Army medical teams. Doctors nearby were needed to help tend the massive amounts of wounded of both sides.These small town Doctors equiped with their portable medical kits of this type were desperately needed following a major Battle or skirmish and no doubt saved thousands of lives. This particular set has a rich and unique history of being passed down from Fathers to sons taking up the family practice since purchased new. The set is in very good condition and the instruments themselves retain a very sharp edge. The set does show some wear from actual use.There is one small scalpel that does not have Snowden brand stamped on it but matches the set perfectly. Otherwise complete. The wooden case is in good condition and the the small key still works the lock! This is a very rare set to come buy in this condition and would be an excellent addition to any Civil War era collection.
