You can look at these and know what they are supposed to represent, the bull and the bear of Wall Stree, bull market of roaring twenties vigor, and the bull market of the recession 1930's. Now these are unmarked as to maker but I know the designer I think, looks like McClelland Barclay's work to me. That and the fact that he designed some bookends for a company in the 1920's that made at least 3 sets of bookends, all in this finish and this modernist art deco style and all unsigned. I have had his buffalo and horse bookends in this same finish and age and type of casting so feel these are the same. These are the best I have had, big ones at 5 inches high by 6 inches long and 9 pounds the pair. They look even larger since they are fully figural or three dimensional so they can be displayed well from any angle. They have over 99 percent of original finish and no damage beyond a tiny nick or two. They are guaranteed original, genuine and unrestored. These were more expensive to make in the beginning, the fact they are two separate figures meant twice the cost of producing them. That, and the fact that this type of finish required a many step process to get this verdigris bronze effect, tells you they were high end bookends. They had to be produced before 1930, height of art deco, and before the stock market crash!!! This type of finish was meant to simulate aged bronze and it does beautifully. Made of heavy pot metal and they even have the original green felts on the bottoms. I have collected bookends for over 18 years and have never had this set before nor can I find it any of my antique and vintage bookend reference guides. Dont' let these pass you by, I dont' think you will get another chance.
