The Tale of the Soga Brothers- A fantastic and favorite story of the Japanese, the story of the Soga brothers is a tale of revenge. The brothers were the offspring of Kawazu Sukeyasu who was a member of the powerful Ito clan in Japan (allied with the Heike and vying for control of the country). Sukeyasu was murdered by his cousin Kudo Suketsune in an attempt to disrupt the clan and control their power. The two brother were just boys at the time of their father's murder, but they were bent on revenge and prepared to bide their time to exact their vengeance. When they found an opportunity to kill Suketsune away from the safety of his mansion, they plotted, trapped him in a tent on a hunting expedition and killed him. Thus, they restored their family honor. However, a huge fight ensued after the killing and Juro (the elder) was killed in the fight. Goro was captured alive but ordered to be executed by the shogun himself. The boys were heroes for restoring the family honor and meeting their own deaths in a honorable manner. The Tale of the Soga brothers is a terrific story told in countless ways in Japan over the centuries. Comments- Our beautiful set of Hiroshige prints offered tonight is from a second edition release of the Sogamonogatari produced by the Yoshikawa Kobunkan publisher in 1917. They are very fine, beautifully colored full images of Hiroshige's fantastic series. Collectors love these beautiful samurai prints illustrating the tale of bravery and revenge of Juro and Goro Soga. They are beautifully printed with excellent detail and color - a great opportunity to collect. Signed- Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Image size- 5 1/2" x 8" + margin as shown Condition- In excellent condition overall as shown with fine original color and detail.
