Solid Fordite Cabochon, known locally as Detroit Agate. Not an agate at all though, just a happy accident! The original Fordite was created many years ago at the Ford Rouge Plant just outside of Detroit, Michigan. Layer by layer, paint over-spray built up on the metal racks that transported car bodies through the paint shop, and into the ovens where each coat was baked hard. Some sharp eyed workers saw the potential for this colorful material and harvested and hoarded what they could. We have worked with this fun material for over 25 years in all of it's incarnations, from the mostly black and brown enamels of the late 1940's, to the colorful lacquers of the 1960's, right up to the vibrant base coats of the late 1980's when just a few factories still painted in the old way. All different, all fun, all Fordite. 40 x 27 x 4.8mm Solid Fordite Our Detroit Fordite cabochons are 100% Fordite Thanks for stopping by, suzybones $2.99 Shipping in the USA for as many cabs as you wish.....
