Solid Silver Chinese Tea Set in original hardwood box By the maker: Luen Wo of Shanghai Not mentioned last time item was listed, this set has been looked at by a reputable auctioneer who said that this is a good quality set and having the box made it more desirable. I know that there is no dints, splits, scuffs or scratches and once cleaned would look like it did when first left factory. I have no problem with anyone coming to view, and if not happy walking away from it, if opting for cash on collection. An exquisite Solid Silver Chinese Tea set by Luen Wo of Shanghai. The set consists of a Tea Pot, Sugar Bowl and Milk Jug set in its original silk lined hardwood box with the wax seals still on top with a brass handle, sadly the Sugar Tongs are not with the set, but this does not detract from the quality. The box opens by means of a sliding front panel leaving the set on full display. Have been informed by a number of people that it is very rare to come across a set of this quality still in its own case. Having done some research on the web, have discovered that the Bamboo design became popular between 1840/1850. Luen Wo the maker worked in Shanghai and made a lot of his work in the last quarter of the 19th Century. The design bamboo is a beautiful stippled textured effect with locust or some oriental bug in the shoots of the Bamboo. The measurements of each piece are as follows: Tea Pot with hinged lid spout to handle 8 3/4"(220mm) x height 5 1/4"(135mm). Milk Jug height 3 1/2"(90mm) from spout to handle 5"(130mm) the Sugar Bowl height 3 1/2"(90mm) and handle to handle 5 1/2"(140mm). The box measures 11"(280mm) high x width 12 1/2"(318mm) x depth 6 1/4"(160mm) . Weights: Milk Jug 183 grams, sugar 231 grams and tea pot 635 grams, combined weight 1049 grams and the set has been weighed in troy ounces at over 30. Each piece is designed with the handles coming from a shoot at the bottom with the bamboo cane going to top of handles continues with two branches joining to the pots with shoots of leaves and with oriental bugs with big antennas and flies. The tea pot opens with a T shaped handle of bamoo with the bamboo shoots embossed on the top of lid. All three pieces have the makers name on the bottom with the same in Chinese. There are no silver marks but this is 100% silver, which has been confirmed. The sugar bowl and milk jug show no signs of being used - no staining. The tea pot has been used but not since the 1960's. There are no signs of damage to any of the pieces apart from the tea pot handle does swivel around but not sure whether designed to do this, there is a nut underneath which could be tightened but I have not touched, the set has been kept in box untouched since I acquired it over nine years ago. The history that I am aware of, is the set was first auctioned in 1940 as a donation for the war effort and was then auctioned by a relative of the purchaser, which I have documentation of. I just feel this hads to the quality of the set, adding history of age. This item will be advertised elsewhere and will be removed if sold before end of listing. Set is here to sell, if this is what you are looking for make your bid. Any serious collectors with interest wanting more pictures please contact with your email and they will be sent.
