This is a slip-cased hardcover book of The Somme: An Eyewitness History, compiled by Robert Foley, published by the Folio Society. The Folio Society is one of the great competitors in publishing fine editions of books. While subscribing, a person can spend anywhere from $19.99 for a book on sale to over $10,000.00 for a very special limited edition. Every Folio book is very finely made. The material for the binding can be buckram, cotton, silk or leather. The spines are sewn, not glued, so they can lie flat and not crack. They use a small number of European mills to create the paper for every book, which is wood-free and acid-free. The slipcase is always robust, covered in colored paper and ornamented with printing or blocking. The Folio Society also spends an immense amount of creative energy on choosing the right typography for each book and every book is newly illustrated or, if non-fiction, full of photographs. After years of direct subscription to the Library of America , the Easton Press , collecting Franklin Library books and Limited Editions Club books, I discovered The Folio Society . Simply put, they create brilliant editions. They feel great, they smell great, they look great, and are fun to read. They also publish historical texts, science and travel books, and updated translations of European literature that can't read more
