Here is a most quaint and apparently scarce 205-year-old giltleather antiquarian 1806 historical Dutch Masonic song book with lyrics to approx. 100 tunes for almost every occasion including ceremonials, processions, holidays, degrees, funerals and myriad odes to moral principles such as friendship, morality & brotherly love, by the famed Jan Steven Van Esveldt Holtrop (1777-1833) frequently partnering with other prominent European authors such as August von Kotzebue, and cited on page 710 in Dutch Decorated Bookbinding in the Eighteenth Century, Vol. 2, Part 2 by Jan Storm van Leeuwen, HES & De Graaf Publishers, 2006; with this particular book entitled:NOTE: we plan to list several rather scarce mid-to-late 1700s and early-1800s Dutch Masonic books this week, so check our other listings (shipping may be combined for multiple purchases). gezangboek voor vrijmetselaaren. [With approbation.] Descriptive Details: Boards of deep charcoal embossed calfskin leather with gilt rosettes, scored borders, cathedral-style gothic arch embossed matching designs on both covers; sun-lightened 5-1/2 compartment spine with gilt scoring; embossed gilt decorative designs at corners of all four cover edges; gilt page ends all sides; hinges tight, firm; virtually no shelf wear; overall condition exceeding good. Total pagination: engraved frontispiece opposite main title page (Note: dark line to left of angel image is not torn); viii including half-title page; 312 main content pages of lyrics for approx. 100 musical selections; plus 8-page “Register Bookmark” section; original light blue silk bookmark ribbon; single blank page added front, back by binder; endpages have come un-glued to covers. Quality early-1800s textured linen paper; all pages present, fairly bright, clean; faint even toning throughout; medium toning first four pages; azure enamel endpapers with discolored glue marks. Measures 6-5/8” (17.0cm) x 4-1/4” (11.0cm) x 1-1/8” (3.0cm); weighs 9-1/2 oz. (265g). From collection of a prominent Midwestern businessman who acquired select volumes from rare book dealers around the world during the late 1800s and early 1900s; book likely purchased in Europe. Biblio, Bookfinder seem to show numerous other books by this author, but no 1806 specimens; WorldCat appears to show nine specimens held in rare book collections at leading institutions and academic libraries, one in US, the other eight in the Netherlands, all in unknown conditions. Full text viewable via Google Books (with different leather cover, no engraved frontispiece) at “Gezangboek voor vrijmetselaaren Holtrop 1806”; no modern reprints listed for sale on Amazon.
