A large alabaster statue base panel from the time of Ramesses II, 19th Dynasty, ca. 1290-1224 BCE inscribed in two registers, the upper register reads: "The son of Re, Ramesses Beloved-of-Amun, given life." Below are ring-shaped, fortified city-walls, each containing a topographical name (Qedu and Irem?) and surmounted by a foreign prisoner whose hands are tied behind his back. To the right is a symbol representing Egypt--the hieroglyph sm3 ("unite") from which papyrus and lotus plants sprout, tangling together in a visual representation of a unified Upper and Lower Egypt; tendrils from these plants reach out to strangle the bound prisoners, the overall meaning clearly being that Egypt has vanquished these foreign localities. From a statue base-the statue of Ramesses II placed atop this base would have been viewed as the king literally treading on the enemies represented below. Private AZ collection. Height: ~11 1/2"; Width: ~8
