Sotheby's The Lost 'Eumaeus' Notebook James Joyce, Autograph Manuscript of the 'Eumaeus' Episode of 'Ulysses' Lot 197 in the Sale of English Literature, History, Children's and Illustrated Books and Drawings London, Tuesday 10th July 2001 Slim quarto (10.5" x 8.5" approx.), paperback with decorative card covers, 35pp, illustrated throughout in colour with photographs of those involved (Sylvia Beach, James Joyce etc) and photographs of the manuscript itself. This catalogue is for the auction sale of the lost 'Eumaeus' Notebook. "A heavily revised and substantially complete early working draft of the 'Eumaeus' chapter, a largely continuous and fluent text written in Joyce's cursive and 'personal' hand in black ink (the earliest hand), with extensive revisions, insertions and additional passages..." "This is an extraordinary and highly important literary discovery, constituting the prolific re-working of an early state of the text, with extensive and substantive differences compared to the later Rosenbach "fair copy" mansucript (which was probably composed from the present draft...")...It is also the earliest known complete early draft of 'Eumaeus' to have come to light and is one of the earliest complete working drafts of any 'Ulysses' episode."
