2010 NOVEMBER 30 PART II SOTHEBY'S LONDON / NOVEMBER 30,2010. RUSSIAN ART PAINTINGS. Sale: [L10115] PART II OVERVIEW Sotheby's Russian Paintings Part II sale draws together a wide selection of oils and works on paper from the 18th century to the present day. Amongst the earliest compositions featured is a rare oil by Jean-Baptiste Le Prince inspired by his travels in Siberia and a set of twenty hand-coloured lithographic views of Moscow and St Petersburg after Karl Beggrov. The work of Russian artists travelling to the far east is also represented in the sale by Konstantin Makovsky's In the Classroom. Painted during the 1870s when the artist visited Cairo with his wife, this masterful work brilliantly illustrates his ability to capture not only the sights and sounds of the Orient but also the character of its people. Costume and set designs by some of the greatest artists of the Ballets Russes are among the 20th century highlights of this sale, including Alexander Benois' designs for Act II of Le Coq d'Or, and The Nutcracker, as well as a costume design from Aladin by Leon Bakst. The auction also features several Himalayan landscapes by Nikolai Roerich and the non-conformist and contemporary art movements are represented by the work of Dmitri Krasnopevstev, Oleg Tselkov, Semyon Faibisovich and Vladimir Kupriyanov. 120 PAGES. read more
