A NOTE ON AUCTION CATALOGUES FOR THE COLLECTOR OR DEALER: T is probably no better reference or guide for valuing works of art than the sale catalogue of a major auction house. you find professional descriptions, accurate evaluations in the form of pre-sale estimates, and excellent illustrations. The price an object brought, at a public sale conducted by a major auction house, is pertinent for several reasons: the object was listed/illustrated and described in a specialist publication made available to dealers/collectors all over the world, and, ostensibly, the hammer price had an under bidder tby establishing a realistic market value at the time of sale. Auction catalogues offer a timeless reference guide for identifying artists/craftsmen, schools, and styles, often of objects not illustrated elsew Describing and illustrating examples from the finest and rarest of museum pieces to the more common and everyday: sale catalogues make up an indispensable part of any serious dealer or enthusiasts reference library.
