In 2005the South African Mint began a theme of “Hunters of Africa,” and the first issue honored the African Wild Dog with 4 proof sterling silver (0.925) coins. The 50 cents 2 oz coin featured 2 wild dogs, the 1 oz 20 c depicted a female with 2 pups, the ½ oz 10 c has wild dogs on the hunt and the ¼ oz 5 c has a single wild dog. (See Photos). Only 1500 proof sets were minted. The set is in an attractive hard case and with papers. The obverse of all coins has the South African coat of arms and the words “South Africa” and 2005. The scientific name, Lycaon pictus, translates to “painted wolf-like animal,” and the Afrikaan name is “wildehond.” This canid is not a feral domestic dog. The color of the dogs is a mix of yellow, white, brown and black patches with no two dogs being alike except for a black streak in the middle of the forehead. Wild dogs are the most endangered carnivore in Africa, and their worst enemy is humans. There are only 3,000 to 5,000 in all of Africa in 600 to 1,000 packs. They are protected only in South Africa and five other nations. The dogs exist in packs of 5 to 15 adults and yearlings. Only the dominant female breeds with the dominant male and she has one litter each year. Pups are born in a den and the average litter size is 8. Pups are fed by both sexes of the pack by bringing meat to the den. Many do read more
