1998 Christmas Issue - Hand-tinted essay depicting South Africa scene on bond paper 79x119mm, signed "Franco" by artist Franco Frescura at front. The design was not immediately adopted but was held in abeyance for future use. The essay was coloured in hand by the artist. Rare item

In recent years, each time a new stamp issue was proposed, one or more artists would be asked to do artwork for the proposed design, which artwork would then need to be submitted for approval. The artwork was handed in to the Post Office and laser-printed essays were taken from the artwork and these essays were sometimes signed by the artist, and one of each essay would be given to each of the members of the Post Office Stamp Programme Committee who would decide after reviewing these essays which designs would be accepted and which for various reasons would not be approved. The members of the committee were able to keep as their own property the essays they were given at the meetings. As can be seen, there was only a handful done for each proposed design, and to date, most of the committee members have kept the essays in their own collections, and very few, if any, have made it to the market place for sale to collectors. The laser-printed essays can be exhibited, as they are a genuine part of the overall process from design to printing - in the approval/rejection

Lovely archival type item which hardly, if ever, becomes available to the public, as most items like this are kept by the artist or by the postal administration. Scarce item for exhibit page.
