You are bidding on a South Africa Medal with 1879 bar engraved in long sloping capitals to 2051 Pte J. Wells 91 st Foot . The 91 st Foot was present at the Battle of Gingindlovu 2 nd April 1879. John Wells was born in Nottingham and enlisted on 21 September 1876 . He had previous service in the 2 nd North Durham Militia. He served sixteen years ending his military career in Stirling on 23 Sept 1892 . Medal is sold with service record. The South Africa Medal was i nstituted in 1880 and awarded to the soldiers of one of Britain 's most savage colonial wars. Please have a look at my other Victorian medal listings.
