South Carolina, Charleston, Bank of the State of South Carolina, $5, Oct 1, 1861, Haxby: SC-45-G50a, Sheheen 573, Civil War date, American Bank Note Company imprint at bottom, tiny lettering below center vignette reads "Painted by John R. White Gen. Marion inviting a British Officer to dinner." aka "Sweet Potato Dinner", General Sumpter at lower left, General Moultrie at lower right, beautifully engraved historical vignettes relating to the Revolutionary War and intricate green security tint two hammer cancellations, nice fine. From the recently dispersed holdings of the South Carolina state archives. The rubber stamped message found on the backs of these notes reads "Dabney, Morgan & Co. vs. The Pres't & Dir's of the Bank of the State of SO. CA. Proved C.H. Simonton, Referee." These notes were saved from destruction as the result of lawsuits against the banks which continued for years after the end of the Civil War and repudiation of all Southern debt. Because these notes were guaranteed by the State of South Carolina by bank charter, they had better legal claims and chances for redemption than Confederate or other Southern notes. These notes were widely accepted at full face value during the War and continued to retain some speculative value evn after all other Southern notes were declared worthless.
