In the eighteenth century anyone who had pretensions to belong to the upper echelons of society and to be in the forefront of fashion, owned many exquisite porcelain or enamel boxes. The latter were based on copper and made for many purposes, including use as snuff boxes, patch (beauty spot) boxes and pill boxes and any wealthy or fashionable person both owned and treasured a number of them. Both hand painted and transfer printed boxes were produced principally in Bilston or Wednesbury in Staffordshire, in Birmingham and in Battersea in London. They were copied and reproduced in the next century and are much collected today. This handsome enamelled box dates from about 1890 and was probably made by the Samson factory in Paris as a good quality copy of the 18th century ones. It is enamelled in green and white on copper, like the originals a century earlier. This box, including the slightly domed lid has canted corners and bears a beautifully hand-painted illustration of an exotic bird against an equally exotic landscape which seems to contain Egyptian pyramids. The oblong panels to the front and back contain attractive flower designs, framed in swirling 'swag' patterning. The green body of the box is spot patterned in white enamel.
