South Vietnam ARVN 71 ST Ranger Battalion Guidon Tri ARVN ...Army of the Republic of Vietnam... 71 st Ranger Battalion.. 2nd Company, guidon..authentic period item..not a reproduction...South Vietnamese. What is it? A guidon.. is a military standard..in this case.. a smaller..triangular flag..that signifies a unit designation..some are swallow-tailed (US)..All ARVN guidons, I have seen, have been triangular.. Size : About 12"..one foot high..and 18" across..has loops.. on the top and bottom, for pole attachment.. Color & Fabric: black satin.. with gray fringe..red & white lettering..embroidered on.. Age & Condition: 35 to 40 years old..excellent..Photo on the flag pole: the top loop of the guidon..slips over the top & under the gold spike..the bottom loop..is tied to the pole, with a separate..black band..so the loop knot.. is not untied and then retied..for the photo = no stress, to display the guidon.. Condition: excellent for it's age..no rips tears or soiling..it required no cleaning..the original owner..stapled the label to the fabric..not the smartest thing, in the world..but the staples.. can be easily removed, with little or no trace..the label identifies..what it is..which unit..but if you read Vietnamese..you don't really need the label..to know what the guidon says... Comments: The guidon lettering says... "TD 71" = Tieo Doan..specialist battalion...Bien Phong = Border Defense Force... "Biet Dong Quan" (BDQ) = Vietnamese Rangers The white, hand written label says .."71 ST RANGER BATTALION..#2 COMPANY..QUARTERMASTER..FACILITY SAIGON..1970'S" Rangers of the army of the republic of Vietnam..were trained and assisted, by US army Special Forces and Ranger advisers..were set up as counter insurgency..light infantry..forming battalions, of about 560 men.. The ARVN Rangers..fought until the end of the war..30th..April ..1975..when they were disbanded.. It appears the TD 71.. was border defense battalion..but I have not been able to find anything else..about their unit history... It appears this guidon came from Saigon..W did it come from ? A vendor associate of mine, who does estate sales and liquidates large collections and museum inventories..The original owner, was probably a US Vietnam vet..who collected the flags, while in country..in the early 1970's..prior to 1973.. I will be selling about 45.. of these ARVN guidons ...all I have seen so far..have significant historical value..and are rare.. considering the number of these items..that were destroyed.. Who wants it ? Nice for Vietnam War collectors and historians..especially collectors with relatives, who served in or with.. the ARVN forces.. Shipping: Winning bidder to pay $4.95.. USPS Priority Mail DC ..flat rate.. small box shipping ..two-three days.. for delivery.. I don't like the postage rate increases..but the flat rate box.. is the best way..to ship..at this point.. No handling fees..postage only..shipping materials are free.. Outside USA.. international postage rates apply.. I research the best shipping rates available.. for domestic or international shipping options..
