The Southern Calendar Clock Company was in business from 1875 to 1879 in St. Louis, Missouri. The three Culver brothers incorporated the business on March 2nd, 1875 and manufactured these handsome and imposing double dial calendar clocks at their factory at 802 Washington Avenue in St. Louis. The mechanisms used in their clocks were mostly manufactured by the Seth Thomas Clock Co. in Connecticut, although examples have been found with Gilbert and New Haven Clock Co. movements as well. The excellent quality mechanism includes a perpetual calendar....meaning that it compensates for differences in the length of the various months. The company sold their clocks directly to the customer and even offered a time payment plan allowing six months for completion of the price of the clock (with 10% interest). In September 1899 the Culver Brothers turned their interests to manufacturing stoves. Due to the high quality of these eight-day clocks as well as the short time that the company was in business, the SOUTHERN CALENDAR CLOCK COMPANY clocks are now a favorite among collectors. The dials on this clock are original--painted on metal dial pans with the lower dial retaining the inscription "SOUTHERN CALENDAR CLOCK COMPANY ST. LOUIS, MO" and "PATENTED JULY 4TH, 1876".(see photographs). On the upper dial are the words: "FASHION" and "PATENTED OCTOBER 11TH, 1875". The wooden finials are also original to the case (with restored spires). Set-up instructions, with stains, are located inside the door of the clock. (See photograph). We are pleased to be able to offer this handsome clock in such outstanding original condition and running well.
