This is a fantastic display, symbolic of the fall of the confederacy in 1865. First we have a southern imprint Carte de Visite of Col. William H.F. Lee, the second son of Gen. Robert E. Lee, who commanded the 9th Virginia Cavalry, a famous confederate Cavalry unit. The CDV is imprinted "C.E. Jones & Vanerson/Photographers/No. 77 Main Street/Richmond, Va." It has a Federal Tax Stamped affixed, which can date it from the fall of Richmond and August 1, 1866. This is most likely an imprint done in a series for the support of war widows and their families. I am sure the affixing of this Yankee stamp galled! The Flag fragment originates from the estate of M.A. Moncure, who served in the 9th Virginia Cavalry from March 6, 1862 until September 30th 1864. It is from the National flag carried by the unit. Rather than surrender their cherished colors to the hated Yankees, the surviving members defied orders to surrender their colors by dividing the flag into small pieces to be distributed to those who had served under it, and to be kept and cherished by the veterans of this bloody conflict The flag fragment and southern imprint CDV, printed as a way to raise money for those devastated by the fall of the south, cannot be more of a poignant reminder of the loss, and the subsequent beginning of the legend of the heroes of the Confederacy.
