Up for auction is one of a few precious pieces of mine that I am listing on auction. This jug is authentic southern art pottery that I came across about 3 years ago. An older gentleman was doing his own estate sale and had a table full of these jugs. When I spoke to him about them, he got a gleam in his eye and explained to me that he personally hand made most of them but he had a few other pieces that inspired him long ago. The pieces that inspired him were all W J Gordy jugs and they were all marked clearly on the bottom. I have sold those a long time ago but held on to two of this gentlemans jugs as I just had a love for the texture and color of them. The fact that I met him and heard his pottery stories. He was 78 yrs old when I spoke to him and have long lost contact. He is originally from the Carolinas . He used a special clay and you can see on the bottom that it is a reddish clay. If you put his work and Gordy's work together, you about cannot tell the difference and in my mind, gave him a run for his money and with the same passion. This jug stands 9 inches tall and is 18 inches in circumference. Gorgeous color and symmetry. This one fascinated me as it has some flecks in it. They have a rainbow hue to them and look like some sort of mica flicks. It's a thick salt glaze with a thick clear glaze over it. The bottom is raw. This one is signed by Mr. Oakley with a date of "78" on it. Beautiful gray green color with flecks of brown and a bluish hue band going through the center. No cracks, no chips or damage. Light crazing and totally sound , see the photos. Any imperfections are original and meant to be. I took good photos so really study them. It truly truly is a piece of art and when you get it, your going to want to cuddle with it. Feel free to ask questions. I am not a professional pottery person but know what I know about this piece and have explained. His other pieces that I have sold years ago went for $100's of dollars with people emailing me desperate for more after they got the first art piece. These are my last two.( I will be listing 5 pieces in all ) I will send this piece via usps priority mail fully insured for the value with tracking at $15.00. Check out my other auctions for more art pottery only this week. I might combine shipping if the pieces are not jeopardized by sending together. The jugs are heavy. Thank you and good luck.
