This item represents the hardcover book "The Southern Pacific, 1901-1985 " by Don L. HofsommerThis book is a twentieth-century history of the Southern Pacific Company and its subsidiaries, and to a lesser extent, their service areas, up to time of the Southern Pacific's planned, but subsequently-aborted merger with the Santa Fe. The focus is on SP's senior managers and on the decisions they made, why they were made and their results. The author has implicitly compared successive management teams against standards set by E. H. Harriman and the SP's railroads with their premier competitors. The book was commissioned by the SP, and the company's archives and personnel were made available to the author, who retained complete editorial control over the book. In addition to its extensive text, there are 27 maps and a number of photographs. However, the book should not be a considered a photohistory. I have included a picture of the front flap of the dust jacket to provide further insight regarding the nature of the book. It should be of particular interest to any aficionado of the Southern Pacific.
