This book uses as its foundation a copy of the Southern Pacific's passenger train consist book, an internal publication, and supplements its extracts with text and a large number of photographs, most of which are in color. It is organized by route; each route has introductory data and numerous photos and sometimes diagrams and other material to enhance understanding of SP's passenger operation. The SP's subsidiary NORTHWESTERN PACIFIC is included in coverage. The book provides an excellent insight into SP passenger operations in the mid 1950s. In addition to photographs and text, such materials as floor plans, advertising material, dining car menus, and the like provide additional information.
