Souvenir Spoons: Pomona & Sunflower: c. 1900 Pomona These two spoons are Art Nouveau. One spoon celebrates the beauty of flowers while the other one emphasizes the wonderful fertility of a cool valley in a warm desert. That fertile valley came to be known as Pomona (which is the name of the Roman goddess of fruit) and the valley in California became rich with its production of citrus fruits. The traveler to Pomona even had initials engraved to make the spoon special. The hallmark is P & B. The delicateness of soft silver may have caused this spoon to be repaired. The letters "st" appear while the remainder of "sterling" seems covered with silver. It doesn't detract from the design on the front. Sunflower Sunflower or, possibly, daisy has no reference to a time or place, but exists only for its artistic merit. The Victorians loved symbolism and each garden flower had symbolic representation and ideas of romanticism. If the flower which tops the spoon is a daisy, it would symbolize innocence. As Chaucer says, "Of all the flowers in the made, I love the Daisie, white and mede." If the flower which tops the spoon is a sunflower, it would symbolize the sun and its power to bring happiness. A coffee spoon with lovely floral designs would always be admired for its fashionable art. The flower spoon is just that: flowers in a naturalistic setting. Also, in the 1890s, it was custom to bring home a spoon reminiscent of a holiday or even a visit to a city nearby. Souvenir spoons are exquisite. It's a wonder that not more have survived from that period of time. This spoon has the hallmark for Watson Co. of Attleboro, MA. Both spoons are 6" or 15cm long. Their bowls are 1 1/4" or 3 cm wide. Both of these spoons are hallmarked. The Pomona spoon has the hallmark "P&B." The Sunflower spoon has the symbol which is the hallmark for Watson Co. This company was located in Attleboro, Massachusetts. Both spoons are sterling silver.
