Soviet WW2 Medal for the Defense of Caucasus. Thisis GUARNATEED ORIGINAL WW2 issue Soviet medal, not a reproduction. This particular medal is Variation 1 characterized by a separate, soldered eyelet (medals of later issue had eyelet made not as a separate part but struck together with the medal). Made in brass and measures 32 mm in diameter. The front has Russian inscription “For the Defense of Caucasus” and the depiction of Red Army tanks with tank-borne infantry storming over ragged terrain with oil derricks and mountains on the background, with airplanes flying overhead. Note the ornament of grapes and grape leafs along the edge (the Caucasus area is renowned for its wines and brandies, some of the best in the Soviet Union). On the reverse is motto “For Our Soviet Motherland!” Issued to one of the Soviet defenders of the Caucasian region during the epic 1942-1943 battle. The area was of vital importance to both Hitler and Stalin as the Soviet Union’s primary source of oil and also as conduit to Turkey and the Middle East. The medal is in decent shape for an Original WW2 soldier’s award. Shows some light oxidation on both the obverse and reverse but not much wear, the raised details are very well defined. The eyelet has been replaced (this was a weak point of all the early, variation 1 campaign medals) but looks good. The suspension read more
